The University of Rostock’s Science and Technology of Life, Light and Matter department represents a unique center for structured research and education in the scientific and technical fields of photonics, catalysis and engineering, regenerative medicine, and simulation technology in Germany and Europe. The highly interdisciplinary research unites elements of physics, mathematics and chemistry with applications of mechanical engineering, electrotechnology, biology and medicine, and rounded out with topics of philosophical, social and economic sciences.
A major focus of the Maritime Systems department is the topic of coastal systems, including both the land-side and water-side aspects combined with aspects of agricultural and environmental sciences, natural sciences and engineering (port management, communication).
The Aging Science and Humanities department will deal with problems of an aging society. Social and medicinal aspects as well as biological causes will be investigated. Connections to the health care industry, one of the economic focal points of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, will also be made.

According to a nationwide ranking, the University of Rostock is among the ten German universities that best foster business start-ups.
