Science and Innovation

Founded in 1419, the University of Rostock is the oldest university in northern Europe. Its tradition is still upheld today: Rostock is the state’s foremost center of research and science and exerts an influence over entire north-east Germany.

The University of Rostock offers a wide, internationally respected and advanced range of programs of study and research opportunities. It enjoys an excellent reputation among scientists, students and cooperation partners alike. Its research facilities are veritable hotbeds for business spin-outs in the technical sector. The University of Rostock is also an active player in the city: it is an integral part of the important network of the economy, public administration and the populace.

The numerous faculties offer over 70 programs of study as well as several graduate and post-graduate programs. The University of Rostock is unmatched by many German universities in its number and diversity of programs offered.

The image of Rostock as a university city is completed by the university cafeterias which have received several awards for excellence among German universities, and the extensive university library.

Research institutes of the Hanseatic City of Rostock

  • the Institute for Baltic Sea Research, newly founded in 1992, with its departments of Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology

At the Warnemünde Science and Technology Centre, more than 500 staff-members and specialists, working in numerous technology-oriented companies, are involved in development and production. The Rostock Innovation and Start-up Center (RIGZ) provides support from conception to financing to young, innovative companies and entrepreneurs.

Rostock also boasts two renowned networks: BioCon Valley and the ScanBaltInitiative. Research, development and production in the fields of biotechnology and medical technology are at home here, as are the fields of environmental engineering and offshore wind energy in the Baltic Sea. Additionally, Rostock is also home to the Schweißtechnische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (training and experimentation centre for welding technology) and its associated Laser Technology and Transfer Centre Rostock, setting new standards in the areas of applied laser technology. The affiliated Maritime Brand- und Sicherheitszentrum Ostsee (Baltic Sea maritime fire protection and safety centre) is a centre for research, development and training in the area of maritime fire protection.

The biomedical research center was completed at the end of 2005 and boasts a nearly 6,000-m² floor space for the production of biomedical products and research activities. 2005 also saw the opening of the Center for Life Science Automation Rostock as an expansion of the Warnemünde Technology Center.

Departments of the University of Rostock

On 4 July 2007, the academic senate of the University of Rostock decided for the introduction of departments dedicated to the research and teaching of a small number of interdisciplinary and future-relevant topics. Nearly all professors and committees of the university were involved in determining the emphases of the three departments: “Science of Life, Light and Matter”, Maritime Systems”, and “Aging Sciences”.
