Hanse and Today

As it was hundreds of years ago, Rostock is still the economic, cultural and intellectual centre of north-eastern Germany.

The city dates back to the 12th century - it got its charter in 1218 and has borne the status of Hanseatic City since 1257. Rostock enjoyed its first period of prosperity in the 14th and 15th centuries. Trade and commerce, among which the book printing trade was included, provided the foundation for rapid development. Rostock acquired the village of Warnemünde from ruler of Mecklenburg in 1323, assuring free access to the Baltic Sea.
