Rostock is a maritime centre on the Baltic Sea coast. Due to its geographical location, the existing infrastructure and the function of the seaport as a transport hub, trade networks in the Baltic Sea region and to Southern and Western Europe have been growing.
The port is the centre for diverse companies of the maritime sector that all wish to take advantage of the deep basin port with a short sea channel and a direct connection to the highway.
For centuries, the port, shipping, shipbuilding, from new constructions to repairs, have played a key role in the economy of the Hanseatic City of Rostock. The maritime industry is the largest employer in the region over 10,000 people are employed in this area. Both large and small companies form the nucleus for technological innovation and the establishment of new products for the sector.
New chances are arising in the fields of mechanical engineering and the building of large motors, electrotechnics, electronics and for technology-oriented companies.
Rostock is the location of one of Europe’s most modern shipyards - the AKER Warnow Werft. Innovative shipbuilding concepts have been developed and implemented here. At the Rostock and Wismar shipyards, the stern and bow of a ship are produced separately and joined at the yard in Wismar. This method of building not only reduces production costs, but also creates a competitive advantage among other shipyards.
The experienced gained in the segment construction method is used for the continual optimisation of the design of the ship. The product range includes container ships such as the own development of the Aker CS and BALTIC series, to special ships for various customer groups.
The Neptun Stahlbau GmbH shipyard provides its clients with a comprehensive range of services from ship repair and maintenance to the complete new construction of ships.

Mediterranean Sea, the Canary Islands, the North Sea and Baltic Sea, the Caribbean Sea and Central America. AIDA Cruises is the market leader in Germany according to turnover and number of passengers. The fleet consists of four club ships: AIDAcara, AIDAvita, AIDAaura and AIDAblu. The fleet will be complemented by two additional ships by 2009..
The companies Solemar and Sunseeker Europe produce yachts in Rostock. Sunseeker Europe makes use of modern production capacities at its shipyard such as a 4-D milling machine for the effective and cost efficient processing of synthetic materials in the production of luxury yachts.
Numerous small and mid-sized enterprises are also active in the maritime industry. Lightweight constructions made of plastics and metal are produced in Rostock, not only for use in shipbuilding, but in the construction of aircraft as well. Numerous IT service providers and electronics companies develop solutions for the growing market for electronics and computer controlled processors on ships. Engineers and technicians in Rostock develop navigation software and steering components for the driving mechanisms of ships and also develop training scenarios and simulation models.
At the mechanical engineering and maritime technology faculty of the University of Rostock, various industry-related problems are researched and solutions developed. The objective is user-related research, for example, the development of new ship forms for the reduction of fuel emission or the optimisation of stowage concepts for the efficient loading of ships from the AKER Warnow Werft shipyard.
The faculty of ship navigation of the Wismar University of Applied Sciences in Rostock-Warnemünde offers the officers in training 3-D simulation for the acquisition of skills and knowledge for the navigation of large and small ships.
A look into the future: The cargo and passenger traffic on the Baltic Sea will increase. Supply companies will merge and the share of regional added value in shipbuilding will further increase.
