Rostock is situated within one of the most dynamic and promising growth- regions of Northern Europe.
Here, between the metropolitan cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Copenhagen, the Life Science industry is developing at a very fast pace. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, there are currently about 83 companies working in this sector - 25 of which are located in Rostock and its direct vicinity. Approximately 1.800 highly qualified specialists are employed in this growth-industry, with 700 scientists working at the State’s research facilities. The successes of local biotechnology enterprises speak for themselves, such as the Centre for Proteomics.
The number of patent applications by companies from the economic region of Rostock has tripled over the past two years. No doubt this is due to the excellent conditions Rostock has to offer:

- So far, 90 companies with 550 employees have settled at the Warnemünde Science and Technology Centre..
- The bio-medical research centre will be completed in the 4th quarter of 2005.
- Also opening in 2005, the competence centre "Life Science Automation”, with a gross area of 3.000m², at an investment of altogether 9.2 million EUR.
- Consultation and support is also available at the Rostock Centre for Innovation and Business Foundation (Rostocker Innovations- und Gründerzentrum).
- Also present here: the Proteomics Centre, ScanBalt Initiative.
Rostock is active in some very important networks. One of them is Scanbalt, the association of the Life Science Initiatives of all Baltic States. 11 countries with a total of 85 million inhabitants, 60 universities and 900 companies within the sphere of biotechnology jointly coordinate research and products. Rostock is also a member of BioCon Valley, the state’s network connecting the promotion of technology and its uses in the economy.
