Transport/Traffic/Logistics

Transport / Traffic / Logistics - In the fields of transportation and logistics, Rostock, as a Hanseatic city, has hundreds of years of tradition, experience and achievements to offer.

Rostock - the turnstile for your business with Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe and Southern Europe. With its seaport, an inter-modal traffic hub has been created with short ways to the markets. This translates into decreased costs for transport and distribution. There are excellent connections here, by rail and road, by water and by air.

The combination of the central location of the city between the Baltic States and Western Europe and the excellent motorway connections is one of the advantages Rostock has to offer as a location for business.

Rostock possesses an uninterrupted beltway around the city. The connection to the motorway A19 provides a direct connection between the Rostock seaport and the capital city Berlin. Additionally, the cities of Hamburg and Stettin are only a few hours away with the Baltic Sea motorway A20.

Rostock received international recognition with the very first privately financed project in the area of transport and traffic, the construction of the Warnow Tunnel, finished in 2003. The Warnow Tunnel connects the motorway in the north-east of the city with the northwest sections of the city – a major time-saving factor.

The University of Rostock is involved in research and innovation and the development of new ideas regarding the field of transport, traffic and logistics.

Various institutes work together with companies, creating new concepts and trends.

Among these innovative institutes and research facilities are:

  • the Baltic Sea Institute for Marketing, Traffic and Tourism
  • the Institute for Traffic and Logistics
  • the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Logistics

Rostock Seaport
The deepest German Baltic Sea port (with a depth of 14.5 m) offers excellent navigational conditions. The protected location of the port at the mouth of the Warnow river on the Baltic Sea, the short (only 3.6 sea miles long) and uncomplicated approach from sea, as well as a depth of 14.5 meters allow ships of up to 250 m in length, 40 m in width and with a draught of 13 meters to enter the port.

With a gross area of more than 7.5 million m², Rostock’s seaport is one of the largest German Baltic Sea ports. Ample reserve space allows flexible adaptation to the needs of the national and the international businesses.

With a total quay length of more than 9.000 meters and 43 berths, diverse cargoes from various vessel types including roll-on / roll-off, break-bulk, bulk cargo and chemicals are handled at the port. The four berths at the new Warnow ferry terminal, as well as the multi-functional jetty at pier 31 offer more than 30 departures to Scandinavia and the Baltic States. More than 2 million passengers use these ferry connections per year – and this number is constantly growing. A regular ferry connection to St. Petersburg has been in operation since 2004, making transport to Eastern Europe and Asia faster and more cost efficient.

Rostock Cruise Port
With 97 port calls by 29 different ships and a passenger volume of 124.500, Rostock became the most important German cruise port in 2005.

The new cruise ship terminal was officially opened on 01 May 2005. The modern architecture with its spacious glass façade on the sea side welcomes passengers to Rostock. Seven entrances and exits ensure short passenger clearance times. The modern infrastructure reinforces the growing need for safety in the tourism industry.

Rostock is no longer just a stop-over location, but has become a port for passenger change-overs for cruise ship operators.

In the near future, the number of calls by cruise ships will reach 150 per year. This represents an enormous development potential for logistics and service companies. Cruise ships have already become a staple of the economy of the city and the region. Rostock is the starting point for excursions to the capital city, Berlin, as well as to Dresden, Prague and Vienna.

Rostock Cargo and Fishery Port
The cargo and fishery port, once the home port of the entire fishery fleet, is today a multi-faceted port for the handling of diverse goods. Numerous service companies for the maritime industry are located here, and the port is also home to institutes and educational institutions as well.

The port is characterised by a gross area of 52 hectares and a total quay length of 2.100m, state-of-the-art supra and infrastructure including refrigerated and other storage facilities as well as a mobile crane for the loading and unloading of break-bulk and bulk cargoes.

The port basin with its depth of up to 8 m receives ships up to 165 m long and 3 to 23 m wide at its 20 berths. The company-owned port railway is tied in with the public network of the Deutsche Bahn, the national railway system. Port facilities are particularly suited for the handling of foodstuffs and fertilizers. Real estate properties, modernised office and industrial buildings are rented and leased on the port grounds, characterised by convenient location regarding traffic connections and a high level of infrastructure development.

There is already a very diverse variety of industrial sectors represented here, with 120 business settled on the port grounds. Newly developed lots may be used as open-air or covered storage areas. Cleared areas for storage of loose materials are available.

Airport Rostock-Laage
Centrally located, the Airport Rostock-Laage is perfectly suited for scheduled and charter flights, as well as for airfreight transport. Flights to international traffic hubs within Germany, such as the Munich airport are offered on a daily basis. Currently, 6.000 planes take off from Rostock-Laage per year. A total of approx. 160.000 passengers used the airport in 2004, continuing the increased growth of the previous years. In addition to the scheduled line service to Munich, a new line service from Rostock to Cologne/Bonn was opened in May 2005. The new passenger terminal opened in September 2005 enables the clearance of more passengers and increases the quality of service due to its optimised procedures and modern infrastructure. Clearance of departing and arriving passengers takes place on two floors in a modern, open terminal building. The passengers can board directly from the terminal via two passenger bridges to the airplanes and depart to various destinations in Germany and Europe. The development of an airpark is a sign of the dynamic development of the economic region of Rostock.
