The Volkstheater Rostock is one of the most important components of the theater scene in Rostock. It consists of the Großes Haus, Theater am Stadthafen, the Barocksaal as well as other theatres and halls. With over 600 performances per year it is a magnet for visitors from near and far.
In addition to the Volkstheater, there are numerous smaller associations of artists making up the city’s culture scene. The COMPAGNIE de COMÉDIE and the cabaret group ROhrSTOCK e.V. are known outside of Rostock as well.
The most well known film theatres in Rostock are the Cine-Star cinemas, spread out across the city. Other alternatives are offered by clubs offering film evenings, for example the li.wu., the Lichtspieltheater Wundervoll.
Rostock’s cultural offerings are abundant. Renowned museums, galleries and theatres, the internationally recognised University for Music and Theater and the Kunsthalle (art museum), which holds important exhibitions of

contemporary art, are only some of the cultural aspects of Rostock.
And there is something to please every palate. Concerts and shows featuring nationally and internationally known performers are often held at the Civic Centre, on the IGA Park grounds and at other venues.
The annual Ostsee Jazz festival as well as the Culture Week of the University of Rostock are always popular events.
A wide variety of pubs and clubs, offer a host diversions: Jazz, comedy, performing arts and live music draw lively crowds. The local restaurant scene offers an exciting range of regional Mecklenburg specialities and international cuisine.
Life in Rostock is never dull. There is something for everybody, from A, as in angling from a fishing cutter, through G, as in golfing on the beautiful courses, all the way to Z, as in a family outing to the zoo. |
