F.A.Q. – Frequently Asked Questions

What are the traffic connections in the city like?

Rostock is the only city in North-Eastern Germany with an uninterrupted beltway. It is situated at the junction of the motorways A19 (Berlin-Rostock) and A20 (Baltic Sea motorway: Lübeck-Stettin). Rostock is accessible via direct train connection from both Hamburg and Berlin. The airport Rostock-Laage offers flights all over the world. You can even travel to Rostock by ship.

What is the public transportation like in Rostock?

All parts of the city are connected by the bus, local train or tram lines. You can even take public transportation to the beach.

How many people live in Rostock?

The greater economic region of Rostock has a population of around 500,000.

What is life like for families with small children?

Excellent. You can live directly in the city center or in one of the surrounding neighborhoods with a lot of green areas, or close to the sea. Many young families prefer to live in the Reutershagen, Hanseviertel, Gartenstadt and Südstadt neighborhoods. Schools are easily accessible. There is a public university (the oldest in Northern Europe) with around 13,000 students. It is much easier to get a place for the children in day care facilities / nurseries in Rostock than in other parts of Germany, such as the Rhine-Main region. Life is easily manageable. The climate is healthy.

What is shopping like in Rostock?

Also excellent. Shopping and strolling through the city is a nice way to spend time and always an experience. And you can find everything here, from Italian pasta to international brand name clothing. The beach, dunes and surrounding areas offer diverse recreation activities. You may discover a whole new lifestyle if you move to Rostock. The sea gives life new impulses. If you want shopping on a large scale, Berlin and Hamburg are close by – or take a ferry to Scandinavia.

What’s the weather like in Rostock?

There are enough jokes about the weather in Northern Germany. Most of these are just rumors. The sun shines often and strong – there are many opportunities to relax on the beach. There must be a reason why Rostock is famous for its beach chairs and tourism.

What is the "stiff breeze" ?

The wind and the air here are harder (when cold) and fresher (when warm) than in areas to the south in Germany. The reason for this is the healthy salty air. There is an expression: “a stiff breeze blows around your nose”, as this is where you feel it most.

Who governs Rostock?

The mayor is Roland Methling, an independent from the alliance for Rostock. The alliance received 58.2% of the vote in the election on 27 February 2005.

What is Rostock’s history?

Around the year 600, Slavic tribes settled here calling it "roztoc", meaning “the widening of the river”. In the 12th century, the settlement was destroyed. A short time later, the area was settled by German merchants and craftsmen. In 1218 Rostock received its charter and has held the status of Hanseatic city since 1257. Due to its rich history, Rostock is one of the Historic Highlights of Germany, a union of 12 mid-sized German cities, including Lübeck, Bremen, Potsdam, Münster, Bonn and Trier, Heidelberg and Augsburg, Freiburg, Regensburg and Wurzburg.
