Pilot Training Network GmbH (PTN), a subsidiary of Lufthansa Flight Training GmbH, is setting up operations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to conduct part of its pilot training out of the new flight base at the airport Rostock-Laage. PTN has successfully operated the flight school InterCockpit since the company’s foundation, and it established a new flight school – Flightcrew Academy – together with Lufthansa CityLine and Germanwings in April 2008. Through this collaboration, an even more targeted training program for commercial pilots can be achieved.
Beginning in 2010, the two flight schools FlightCrew Academy and Intercockpit will be united under one roof, and PTN will be able to leverage this unification at the flight bases Rostock-Laage and Vero Beach (Florida, USA) for an even more effective pilot training program. The second phase of the program, the Instrument Flight Rules, or IFR Training, will be relocated to Germany. The airport Rostock-Laage possesses ideal conditions including its modern infrastructure and a new training center that are very well-suited to the processes of the PTN flight schools.
The airport Rostock-Laage (IATA: RLG; ICAO: ETNL) is the largest commercial airport in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpormmern. Originally established as a military airbase, the airfield has been used by the commercial operator Flughafen Rostock-Laage GmbH as a civil regional airport since 1993. The total area encompasses around 1,000 hectares of which 60 hectares are set aside for civil aviation. This military-civil partnership in aviation is unique in Germany. Due to its excellent geographic location, the regional airport is becoming more and more popular among tourists and business travellers alike as a gateway to the Baltic Sea region. Rostock is geographically situated as a traffic hub for Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and south and east Europe.
