10 Years of Caterpillar Motoren Rostock GmbH

A success story of large engines

“Caterpillar Motoren is a German-American success story”, remarks Oswald Schöffel, General Manager of Caterpillar Motoren GmbH & Co. KG in Kiel. “With innovative products, the company has achieved continuous growth in the past years and has a secured an excellent position in the marine shipping, power generation, and oil & gas industries. This is especially true of our Rostock location which has made a name for itself among shipping companies and passengers alike for the supply of low emission marine engines for cruise ships”.

Caterpillar Inc. – headquartered in Peoria, USA – acquired shares of Krupp MaK Maschinenbau GmbH, Kiel (MaK) in 1997, and later renamed the facility Caterpillar Motoren GmbH & Co. KG. Only two years later, Caterpillar expanded from the Kiel location and acquired shares of the tradition-rich Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock (DMR). After a 12-month conversion project and the expansion of the engine testing capacities, the production of the largest Caterpillar engine series MaK M 43 was relocated from Kiel to Rostock in 2000.

For the past 10 years now, medium-speed, 4-stroke engines with a rating of 6,000 – 16,000 kW have been produced at the Warnemünde location. In the first year of production, over 50 engines were delivered that were used as propulsion or generator engines on ships, for power generation in stationary plants, or in the oil & gas industry.

Over the past 10 years, engine production in Warnemünde has more than tripled its capacity. At the over 70,000 m² facility in Rostock, 120 employees produce diesel engines of the series M 32, VM 32, M 43, VM 43, as well as gas engines of the series GCM 34. Caterpillar Motoren Rostock has supplied engines for:

  • six AIDA cruise ship newbuildings at the Meyer shipyard, each with 4x MaK 9 M 43 C engines
  • five cruise ships of subsidiary companies of Carnival Cruise Corporation, each with 4x MaK 12 M 43 and 2x 8 M 43 engines
  • numerous Mak 8 M 43 and 9 M 43 main engines for container feeder vessels for German and Chinese shipyards
  • stationary power plants in South America with up to 15 engines of the type 16 M 43 C
  • compressor plants in gas pipelines in the USA with over 70 gas engines of the type GC M34

Caterpillar Motoren puts great emphasis on qualified employees, and takes on new apprentices each year. The Caterpillar facility began its own training program in 2001, and is today widely regarded as one of the most sought-after companies for apprenticing. It currently has 43 apprentices training to become industrial mechanics specialized in engine assembly and testing. Caterpillar Motoren Rostock was awarded the “Top-Ausbildungsbetrieb” award, recognizing its apprenticeship program, by the Rostock Chamber of Industry and Commerce in both 2009 and 2010.

Caterpillar Motoren Rostock GmbH, now in its 10th year of operation in Rostock, is now among the leading companies in the maritime sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and its Cat and MaK engines are established worldwide in numerous applications.

“Marine engines from Rostock are powering ships on all the world’s oceans. What began in 1851 with Germany’s first sea-going steel-constructed ships built on the Warnow river, is being advanced today by Caterpillar Motoren Rostock GmbH”, comments Rostock’s mayor Roland Methling. “We thank Caterpillar for its trust in Rostock and for its great commitment over the last decade!”

“Caterpillar plays an important role in the maritime sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern”, adds Minister for the Economy, Jürgen Seidel. “Engines from Rostock drive the mechanical engineering industry of our state; the beginning of Caterpillar’s operations here in 2000 contributed to Rostock’s reputation as an attractive location for industry and production”.
