University of Rostock Ranks Among Top 10 Universities Fostering Business Start-Ups

A new study investigated 59 German universities for their potential for business start-ups

According to a nationwide ranking, the University of Rostock is among the ten German universities that best foster business start-ups. This study was carried out by the University of Munich under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schmude. The University of Rostock moved up several positions from rank 17 in 2007 to rank 10 in 2009 by offering students, alumni, and staff particularly good chances for starting up new businesses.

The ranking, which is regularly carried out by the faculty of economic geography and tourism research at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, evaluated eight criteria at 59 German universities. These criteria include the transfer of knowledge from the business community, cooperation and coordination, networking with the business community and other scientific facilities, spin-out initiatives, and the mobilisation of entrepreneurship. Likewise, the university-political framework was a factor of evaluation.

2009’s ranking is a symbol for the University of Rostock and its start-up office of excellent work in the qualification and guidance of business starters, as well as in the coordination and mobilisation of entrepreneurship. Likewise, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s university-political framework scored comparatively highly. The study recommends supporting the universities both on a political and financial level in order to be able to continue to foster business start-up initiatives in the future. According to the study, potential for improvement exists in the exchange of information and experience between states on a political level.
