Despite the difficult prevailing domestic and international economic situation, the wind energy industry in the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can look back on stable development and look forward to good growth potential in the future. Companies such as Nordex Energy GmbH, e.n.o. energy windpower GmbH, SUZLON ENERGY GmbH, or the DMR/RMT group are examples of the continuous growth of the renewable energies sector in our state. An additional highlight for our region is the establishment in 2008 and success of the large pipe production facility of EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH at the Rostock Seaport. This is an excellent example of foresight and courage, of a company taking advantage of the chances of the new international growth segment offshore wind energy. EEW has already secured contracts for the construction of foundations for the first German offshore wind farm Baltic I to be erected in 2010 approximately 15 km north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula.

The positive development of the regional wind energy industry is supported by WIND ENERGY Network Rostock e.V. (formerly OFFSHORE ENERGIES Competence Network Rostock e.V. until February 2009), founded in 2005 as a spin out from the Rostock Offshore Planning Committee. The official aim of this organization is to promote and develop the Rostock region to a leading wind energy competence center in Germany. The association is a platform for the entire value chain and actively supports existing local companies within the wind energy sector as well as companies wishing to establish a new presence in the region. Additional areas of focus of the Network include active lobbying, network building within the industry, the bundling of knowledge and experience, presentation of the network at trade fairs, and active participation for the amendment of the statutory framework in the renewable energies sector.
It is important for the wind energy competence center to secure its position and future growth, and to be able to benefit from innovations and synergies in the near future. This can only be accomplished if the Network is further expanded and synchronized with other industry networks. To this aim, WIND ENERGY Network Rostock e.V. developed a new network concept and applied for a funding project for network management at the end of 2008. With this funding project, the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern supports the work of industry networks, particularly in growth clusters. “We are pleased to support this network that has served as an important ambassador of the state (of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) within the wind energy industry for the past years, and to accelerate the development of this sector of significant future importance”, comments Jürgen Seidel, Minister for the Economy, Labour and Tourism of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
“Receiving this funding enables us to professionally implement our new network concept. With the help of work groups and a new network management concept, we are going to concentrate on the focal points Wind Energy Business, -Science, -Campus, and –Services”, remarks Andree Iffländer, Chairman of the Board of WIND ENERGY Network Rostock e.V.
As a service partner, Rostock Business – the company for the promotion of business and technology of the Hanseatic City of Rostock – will continue the coordination of the work of the Network with utmost attention to quality. “The requirements of the international market are constantly increasing. Our local companies have to keep pace with these developments. We support the wind energy sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the wind energy competence center in Rostock. We want to facilitate the expansion of the regional network for the benefit of our region and our state”, explains Christian Weiß, Managing Director of Rostock Business.
“In the current stage of development, it is essential for the regional companies to participate in the value creation of the first offshore wind farm project in Germany. By proving themselves in this way, they will be able to secure their position for the long term on the international market. The Network supports us as member company through targeted lobbying”, comments Olaf Wunderlich, General Manager of EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH.
WIND ENERGY Network Rostock e.V. invites all companies working in the wind energy sector to become involved in the work of the Network. Please contact the Network (see contacts details below) for additional information.
