Rostock is rich in maritime tradition. The maritime sector is distinguished by a continually growing port industry, a modern ship building industry, as well as competent component suppliers and service providers. Even in the growing offshore wind energy sector – on of the economic mega-trends – Rostock assumes a leading role.

Rostock’s name is likewise synonymous with rapid growth in the field of biotechnology / life sciences. There are currently 83 companies in this sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 25 of which are located in Rostock or the surrounding region. The success of local biotechnology companies and institutes speaks for itself – take the Proteome Center as an example. Additionally, Rostock is a member of BioCon Valley – a statewide network uniting the promotion of technology and its economic applications.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s modern ports and excellent inland connections to entire Europe make it a hub for intermodal transportation. Rostock is an international hub: its central location means low transportation and distribution costs and makes it a prime location for logistics and trade.

IT services are another one of Rostock’s strengths. Service providers and telemarketing companies find ideal conditions and ideal infrastructure in Rostock.

Rostock is an offshore wind energy region. The natural and geographical features of the city, the powerful maritime industry with its long tradition, and the advanced research and development potential of the city are a magnet for new offshore wind energy competence partners.

Tradition and innovation – Rostock is making a name for itself in the aerospace industry. In close proximity to Hamburg, one of the leading European centers of civil aviation, Rostock is becoming a stronghold of aerospace service providers and component suppliers.
According to a nationwide ranking, the University of Rostock is among the ten German universities that best foster business start-ups. The offshore wind energy industry continues to play a leading role in the economic development of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Oehm und Rehbein GmbH, a leading provider of medical system solutions, will begin construction of its new headquarters in Rostock in February, creating up to 10 new jobs. Oehm und Rehbein has had a presence in Rostock since the beginning of the 1990s, and is expanding its operations to keep pace with growing demand in the medical industry.
