Research / Networks

Science and business are closely connected in Rostock. The research facilities of the University are veritable hotbeds for companies working in the IT sector and create a unique entrepreneurial climate for the development of future-oriented products. Furthermore, Rostock, with its 14,000 students, has the largest student body of any university in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Of this total, 2,300 students are enrolled in technical / business studies, a fact which ensures a large potential workforce for IT companies. The Informatics program at the University of Rostock is constantly among the leaders in university rankings. One factor of this success is certainly the interdisciplinary projects with the fields of medical technology and biotechnology, as well as the close connection to transfer centers such as the Steinbeis Foundation.

The concentration of innovative companies working in the high-tech sector creates valuable synergy effects. At the Warnemünde Science and Technology Centre (TZW), located on a campus with a gross area of 4000 m², there are around 60 companies working in close contact with the technology park and the Fraunhofer Institute for Graphical Data Processing. The multimedia center of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located at the Rostock Innovation and Start-up Center (RIGZ) which, due to the level of support provided, is an excellent location for business establishment. The IT Initiative M-V promotes products and services on a state-wide basis by initiating cooperation between companies, universities and research facilities. Service centers receive active support, particularly through the association Telemarketing Initiative M-V (TMI). Founded in part by the government of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a platform for companies in the telecommunications sector, it aims to bundle the interests of the individual businesses involved and forms a network for politics and business. The Verein Landesinitiative Neue Kommunikationswege Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (state association for new communication channels) promotes the spread of new information and communications technologies in the business world.
