The medical faculty of the University of Rostock and the University Clinic possess a modern infrastructure that sets a benchmark both in research as well as in health care. The Deutsche Med, a comprehensive, innovative health care concept, and the Südstadt Clinic with its modern operating room, exemplify that Rostock has always recognized the requirements of modern medicine. Around 14,000 students pursue degreses at the University of Rostock, the oldest university in Northern Europe. It is a hotbed for economic and scientific developments. There exist many technology and competence centers for young, technology-oriented companies operating in the fields of Life Sciences, the maritime industry, production and service provision. The Center for Life Science Automation (Celisca), the Competence Center for Bio-Materials, and the Center for Proteomics are just a few examples of a dynamic research policy within the bio-medical technology field. The Bio-Medical Research Center (BMFZ) with over 6,000 m² floor space for offices and labs is a prime location with the highest standard of technology in the direct vicinity of the university. Rostock is a leader in the fields of regenerative medicine and medical technology, with particular strengths in the areas of stem cell therapy, biological implants, tissue engineering and bio-sensor technology, both in terms of research and applications in the business world. The Leibniz Institute for Catalysis with 180 employees is one of the leading centers for applied catalysis research, and just another example of the flourishing Life Sciences industry in Rostock.
Rostock is also an integral part of some very important networks. One of them is Scanbalt, the association of the Life Science initiatives of all Baltic States. 11 countries with a total of 85 million inhabitants, 60 universities and 900 companies within the sphere of biotechnology work together on joint research projects and product development. Rostock is also a member of BioCon Valley, the state’s Life Science network, connecting the promotion of technology and its applications in the economy. The Warnemünde Technology Center is home to around 90 companies. The international competence center Life Science Automation, with a floor space of over 3,000 m², unites interdisciplinary research and development projects by engineers and scientists, predominately in the field of automation technology. The Rostock Center for Proteomics offers methods and technology platforms for the research and application of new technologies in the field of proteomics. The Rostock Innovation and Start-up Center (RIGZ), home to around 45 companies, provides additional consulting and support. At the AgroBio Technikum in Groß Lüsewitz, companies apply the results of scientific research in the field of agro-biotechnology to develop and market products, technologies, procedures and services.
