Dynamic growth
Rostock is located in one of the most dynamic and promising growth regions of Northern Europe. Between the metropolises of Berlin, Hamburg and Copenhagen, the Life Sciences industry is growing rapidly. There are currently 83 companies working in this sector, 25 of which are located in Rostock and its direct vicinity. Approximately 1,800 highly qualified specialists are employed in this growth-industry, with 700 scientists working at the State’s research facilities. The successes of local biotechnology enterprises speak for themselves, such as the Centre for Proteomics.

Perspectives
The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has set a challenging goal for itself of becoming Germany’s capitol of the health care services sector, and promotes the development of this sector. Rostock is an excellent location from which to participate in this potential. People are growing more and more health-conscious. Spending on health care services will continue to increase over the next years. The growing network of hotels, tour operators, rehabilitation centers, universities, medical technology companies and local companies in the field of health protection and rehabilitation is driving the development of high-quality therapies and health tourism products in the Rostock region. The nutrition industry in the Rostock region is making a large contribution to achieving the state’s goal. There are new approaches to interlock the life sciences and nutrition sectors to increase the product innovation and earning potential in the field of “life foods”.
The University of Rostock also pioneers future-oriented topics. With its new department “Science and Technology of Life, Light and Matter”, the disciplines of natural sciences, engineering and medicine are united, for example in studying new materials and their interaction with light for application in the field of biotechnology. The department “Maritime Systems” sets its focus on coastal systems, both from the land and water perspectives. The department “Aging Sciences and Humanities” deals with the challenges of an aging society, and is of particular interest in the health-care-services industry.
