The city of four ports
Its protected location at the mouth of the Warnow river on the Baltic Sea, a depth of 14.5 meters, and the short and uncomplicated approach from the sea (only 3.6 sea miles), make the Rostock Seaport an ideal location for cargo and passenger shipping. With a gross area of more than 7.5 million m², Rostock Seaport is among the largest German Baltic Sea ports. Ample reserve space allows for flexible adaptation to the logistics and infrastructural needs of national and international companies.
With a total quay length of more than 11 kilometers and 46 berths, diverse cargoes from all vessel types can be accommodated. Nine berths at the ferry terminal and Ro-Ro terminal are available for passenger and cargo traffic. In addition to cargo ships, over 20 ferry connections per day to Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltic states accommodate a passenger volume of over 2 million passengers per year. A direct connection to and from Ventspils, Latvia, makes north-east Europe quickly and easily accessible. The Rostock Seaport has a total cargo throughput volume of over 26 million tons, a figure which is projected to increase significantly in the next years.
The passenger volume at the cruise port in Rostock-Warnemünde is continually increasing as well. The Rostock-based cruise operator AIDA Cruises is one of the driving forces behind this trend. This trend represents an enormous potential for logistics companies and service providers. With 116 port calls by 31 different cruise ships and a passenger volume of over 170,000, 2008’s cruises season was the most successful to date. The new, modern cruise terminal is well-equipped for passenger change-overs. The new construction of one of three berths in Warnemünde will accommodate even larger cruise ships in Warnemünde. Rostock has become a popular start and destination port for cruise operators, and offers passengers excursions in the city and region as well as to the German capitol, Berlin.
The Rostock Cargo and Fisheries Port, once the home port of an entire fishery fleet, is now a multi-purpose port for the handling of diverse cargoes. Numerous service providers for the maritime industry have their offices on the port grounds, as well as institutes and educational institutions. The port is characterised by a gross area of 52 hectares and a total quay length of 2100m, state-of-the-art supra and infrastructure including refrigerated and other storage facilities as well as a mobile crane for the loading and unloading of bulk and general cargoes. The port basin with its depth of up to 8 m receives ships up to 165 m long and 3 to 23 m wide at its 20 berths. The company-owned port railway is tied in with the public network of the Deutsche Bahn, the national railway system. Port facilities are particularly suited for the handling of foodstuffs and fertilizers. Real estate and modernised office and industrial buildings are rented and leased on the port grounds. The convenient location regarding traffic connections and a high level of infrastructure development make it a desirable business location. There is already a high diversity of industrial sectors represented here, with 150 business settled on the port grounds. Newly developed lots may be used as open-air or covered storage areas. Cleared areas for storage of bulk materials are available.
Ideally located near the junction of the motorways A19 (Rostock-Berlin) and A20 (Hamburg-Stettin), the Airport Rostock-Laage is perfectly suited for scheduled and charter flights, as well as for airfreight transport. Flights to international traffic hubs within Germany, and abroad such as Munich, Cologne/Bonn, Nuremberg and Zürich are offered on a daily basis. Currently, 8,800 planes take off from Rostock-Laage per year. A total of approx. 192,000 passengers used the airport in 2007, continuing the increased growth of the previous years. The passenger terminal enables the clearance of 1 million passengers annually and increases the quality of service due to its optimised procedures and modern infrastructure. Clearance of departing and arriving passengers takes place on two floors in a modern, open terminal building. The passengers can board directly from the terminal via two passenger bridges to the airplanes, and depart to various destinations in Germany and Europe. The Airport Rostock-Laage is also pursuing ambitious goals in the field of air cargo. The commercial and industrial properties surrounding the airport are ideal for logistics-oriented companies and a further sign of the dynamic development of the economic region of Rostock.
