Research and innovation for and within the maritime industry is main focus of the University of Rostock, with marine systems and processes representing a major focus. The faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology with its numerous institutes carries out research and develops solutions for many of the industry’s challenges. The overall goal is the application of the research, for instance in the case of the development of new ship forms for the reduction of fuel emissions, or the optimization of stowage concepts for more effective loading of ships.
At the nautical college of the University of Applied Sciences Wismar in Rostock-Warnemünde future officers are educated in 3-D simulation centers and develop their skills of navigation of both large and small ships.
Competent cooperation partners and networks form the basis of innovative research and development projects. An example is the Maritime Allianz Ostsee (Baltic Sea Maritime Alliance), an association of over 50 companies in the maritime industry; or Maritime Safety Assistance, an association for the development and marketing of assistance systems for safer sea transport. Particularly in connection with the InnoRegio competition of the Federal Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF), joint research projects and networks of suppliers and service providers have, also in collaboration with the universities and research institutes such as Fraunhofer Anwendungszentrum Großstrukturen in der Produktionstechnik Rostock, made significant technological advances. This reinforces the excellent conditions for the promotion of research for Rostock companies and research institutes.
