For centuries, Rostock’s economy has thrived around its port, shipping and shipbuilding - from newbuilding to repair yards. Innovative shipping companies and shipyards, component suppliers and engineering consultants, and maritime service providers drive the maritime industry in the Hanseatic City and the region. The maritime industry is the largest source of employment in the greater Rostock region with over 10,000 employees. Companies both large and small form the nucleus for technological innovation and the creation of new products for the industry.
The geographical location, the modern infrastructure and its function as an international hub have developed the port of Rostock into a center for trade in the Baltic Sea Region and south and west Europe. The port is the center for numerous companies of the maritime sector that all wish to take advantage of the deep basin port with a short sea channel and a direct connection to the motorway. Rostock is the maritime center of the Baltic Sea coast.
Outlook: cargo and passenger transport on the Baltic Sea will continue to increase. Suppliers will merge and the share of regional value creation in the shipbuilding industry will increase. Especially in the fields of maritime traffic and the port industry, large growth potential exists. The growth in the Baltic Sea Region and the expansion of the EU, investment in the improvement of hinterland connections and the increase in maritime tourism will strengthen Rostock’s economic position. These economic factors are connected to research initiatives. Specialized projects in the areas of safety systems / navigation such as the Galileo research project will continue to develop. In the “research port Rostock”, the new European satellite navigation system Galileo, a further development of GPS, is currently being developed. Galileo allows the integration of terrestrial transmitting stations, the so-called Pseudolites, in order to improve precision or as a replacement for missing satellite signals. The aim of the project is to improve the precision and safety of navigation of ships in the sea channel and port basins, especially in difficult conditions. The “GAMMA” project aims to promote the development of applications for ship and cargo traffic both land-side and sea-side. This project strengthens Rostock’s position as a center of technology. Furthermore, large synergy potential exists between offshore wind energy facilities and aviation technology.
