The modern compact shipyards at the traditional shipbuilding locations are the cornerstone of the maritime industry on the Baltic Sea. Investments in the billions have made the local shipyards among the most modern and productive in the world. Predominately container ships, but also tankers, cruise ships and specialized ships with high outfitting requirements are produced at the yards. The complex and technology-rich interior equipment – from propulsion systems to steering, from climate control systems to cranes – is all provided by suppliers from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. These regional players are integrated into the network of global shipyard-owning corporations and supply networks.
Rostock is the hub of trans-European transport. The city takes a place in Europe’s new center and unites east and west, Scandinavia and Europe. The consistently high export volume of the German economy and the world-wide increasing flow of goods have led to above-average growth of the ports. Modern port access ways, inland connections and railroad networks are among the many logistical advantages. The port industry is strengthened by the establishment of maritime service providers, industrial producers, trade companies and ship operators directly at and around the port grounds.
Rostock is leading the way in maritime tourism. The Hanseatic City has surpassed all other German ports in terms of ferry connections, visits by cruise ships and passenger volume. This success is attributable to two factors: the entrance to the port is as short as the walk from the quay into the spectacular seaside resort Warnemünde; and the way to Berlin is shorter than from any other port. A bus or chartered train is available directly at the terminal to take the passengers to the capital city. Additionally, a new ICE train connection from Rostock to Munich is in place. Passenger change-overs and ship supply and waste disposal are carried out in a very short time. Should repairs be necessary, there are numerous service providers for ship and motor repair available.
